Miriana Cascone holds a Master in Communication Strategies and Techniques from the Department
of Social, Political and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Siena. Her final dissertation, with
honour, “Facebook took me to Lampedusa: an ethnography of smartphone use among migrants and
asylum seekers in three reception centres in Sicily” won the 1st prize for the best thesis in Media and
Communication from CORECOM Tuscany.

She is currently a PhD candidate in Media and Communication Studies at Södertörn University, in
Stockholm. Her research project explores media practices and the role of technology in Swedish
detention centres.
Her research interests are in the field of migration, the interaction with communication, biometric and
surveillance technologies, and transnationalism. Miriana is particularly interested in the implications
that technologies have on migration management in a broader context, exploring regimes of
deportability, exclusion and vulnerability produced by state-actors.

She is currently the doctoral representative on the Internationalisation Committee of the Doctoral
Council and from June 2024, the Student and Early Career Representative of the interest group of
Intercultural Communication within the International Communication Association (ICA).
She has been an active participant in several workshops and conferences, both national and
international such as ECREA, ICA, STS-MIGTEC.
